2011 Ride to Cure Diabetes

The 2011 Ride to Cure Diabetes season is now over.

After months of training and fundraising, riders from around the world made the trek to multiple ride sites. U.S. rides included Burlington, LaCrosse, Tucson, Tahoe and Death Valley. The Lawrence family team particpated in the Death Valley Ride in October.

The story behind Team Chad and Dad and Melissa Too!

Since 2002, Team Chad and Dad have been riding the Death Valley Ride to Cure Diabetes every year in October. (That of course was with the exception of 2006 when they had to take a break and 2009 when they rode in the Burlington Vt Ride to Cure Diabetes.) In 2010, Melissa (Chad's Sister) volunteered in Death Valley at the Jubilee Pass turnaround along with her Mother. Chad and Dad was joined by Melissa as a rider in 2011... which resulted in the team name change to Team Chad and Dad and Melissa Too...

In 2011 - Team Chad and Dad and Melissa Too raised over $12,000 through the ride. That brings the total for this family team since 2002 to over $78,000.

Melissa Winters - Sister of Chad... Melissa for many years was a force to be reckoned with when it came to the Walk to Cure Diabetes. Since her trip to Death Valley as a volunteer in 2010 - she was hooked on the ride. She showed determination and focus as spent the winter months of 2010 into 2011 training on an indoor wind-trainer using and old clunker of a mountain bike. Mom and Dad sprung for a new bike in the Spring and there has been no stopping her since then. She completed her first ride in October of 2011. She also raised more money than her brother and dad. Way to go Melissa.

Charlie Lawrence - Charlie is "dad"... father of Chad and Melissa. Charlie and his wife Donna were co-founders of Ulster County JDF (as it was known as back in 1975). Charlie converted from running 10k's and marathons to biking in preparation for his first Century ride in Death Valley for the 2002 season. Hooked on biking since then (and retired from running ) he has become a Death Valley addict. Charlie is also the local JDRF chapter's Advocacy Team Chair and Research Information Volunteer who speaks to local organizations about JDRF funded research.
